When it rains, it pours and floods the bathroom
So... in keeping with the crazy frigging week we are having, things just got crazier today.
At about 7:00 a.m. all three of us were awake. Aria seemed completely unaware of her traumatic going-to-bed routine from the night before. She was in a great mood, all giggly and smiley.
At about 7:45 a.m. I was out the door to take Charlie to the vet, where he was getting his second abscess surgery. The one on the top of his head was healing fine but he got a second infection under his chin, so we had to repeat the whole process.
At about 8:15 Hosanna had just changed Aria into the day's clothes and gotten herself dressed, and was going to come down to eat breakfast. Instead, Aria puked all over both of them. The hugest spitup she's ever had. Drenched both mommy and baby, all the way down to both of their underwear. So they both had to strip off their clothes and get in the bath.
By all accounts they had a lovely bath. But when Hosanna unplugged the bathtub, it dutifully sent the water down the pipes downstairs - which then hit a giant clog in our sewer, and decided to re-route itself back into our downstairs bathroom via the toilet. Hosanna just happened to come downstairs to grab a diaper and discovered the whole bathroom flooding with warm soapy water. (Hey, we really needed to mop that floor anyway, right?)
She grabbed a bunch of towels, threw them on the floor, and then spent the next hour juggling the phone (Roto-Rooter, frantic messages to me), about twelve sopping wet towels and a bucket, and a suddenly unhappy baby who refused to be put down. Not too fun.
Hosie eventually got ahold of me right when I sat down to my desk (after being accosted by the usual suspects right when I walked in the door at my office). I decided to just come back home.
So, we both ended up taking the day off work. Roto-rooter came out eventually and unclogged our sewer. (It's the third time they've been out in the past ten months. Previously they had to replace the pipes for two of our four sinks which had completely corroded.) The whole process took several hours. We were gratified to learn that years of buildup and a few tree roots were the problem, not our recent switch to GDiapers. GDiapers rule and we were going to be really bummed if they were stopping up our toilets. They may have caused the problem to manifest faster, but still we're happy to find out they aren't the cause of our woes.
Charlie's operation went OK, although the vet is still absolutely baffled as to what is causing his infections. It took him a long time to wake up from the anasthesia this time - it was at least 8 hours before he could walk without falling over. They removed the sutures from the top of his head, but now he has some in his chin. It looks like he's wearing a shoelace bow tie. We have another follow up on Saturday to check him out again and get the last sutures removed. I am going to freak if anything else comes up after this. It's been going on for over two weeks now and we've gone to the vet 6 times I think.
Anyway, after that the day got better. Although the plumbing and Charlie situations were very stressful, it was also nice to spend the day at home with Hosanna and Aria. We had a good day. We even managed to plant a few herbs in the garden. My allergies hit in full force though so I had to come back inside. (As a side note, I would like to blame my terrible writing on the copious quantities of Benadryl I took about an hour ago.)
At bedtime tonight we put Aria down in the crib at 8:56 p.m. She cried until 9:13 and then fell asleep. Hosanna reassured her once after five minutes. So, the first night it was a total of 70 minutes before she got to sleep. Last night, it was a half hour. Tonight, it was twenty minutes. Now I will spend the rest of the night vigorously knocking on wood and hope that trend continues.
